Why Pelvic Health Matters (And How Pilates Supports It)
This month, in honor of Pelvic Health Awareness Month, we’re taking a moment to highlight something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough—but impacts so many people.
The pelvic floor.
Recently, The Coastal Star featured our owner, Danielle Hollander, along with one of our clients, in a piece focused on the importance of maintaining a strong pelvic floor and how Pilates plays a role in supporting it.
And honestly, it’s a conversation we’re really glad is starting to happen more openly.
So… What Is the Pelvic Floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that acts like a supportive sling at the base of your pelvis. These muscles help support your bladder, bowel, and, in women, the uterus.
Like any other muscle group, they need to be strong and functional to properly support your body.
When they’re not, it can show up in ways that are often overlooked or normalized, like:
- Weakness or instability in the core
- Lower back discomfort
- Urinary leakage
- Pelvic pain
And while these issues are common, they’re not something you just have to “deal with.”
Why It Matters More Than You Think
Pelvic floor health becomes especially important with age, after childbirth, or during hormonal changes.
In fact, studies show that one in four women in the U.S. will experience a pelvic floor disorder at some point.
That’s not niche. That’s widespread.
But because it’s rarely talked about, many people don’t even realize what’s happening in their bodies—or that there are ways to support it.
Where Pilates Comes In
At Remix, we talk a lot about core strength. But what we really mean is deep core strength—and the pelvic floor is a huge part of that.
As Danielle shared in the article:
“Pilates is a great way to strengthen your core muscles, and the pelvic floor is part of your core.”
Pilates focuses on:
- Controlled, intentional movement
- Breathwork that engages and lifts the pelvic floor
- Strengthening the deeper stabilizing muscles
It’s not just about surface-level strength. It’s about building support from the inside out.
Real People, Real Impact
One of our clients featured in the article shared how Pilates shifted her focus from aesthetics to strength—and how that shift changed everything.
From showing up consistently to feeling stronger, more supported, and more connected to her body, her story is exactly why we do what we do.
Because this isn’t just about a workout.
It’s about feeling better in your body—and understanding how to take care of it long-term.
A More Open Conversation
Pelvic health is often stigmatized or brushed aside, but it doesn’t have to be.
Movement, awareness, and education are powerful tools.
Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been practicing for years, building strength through intentional movement is one of the most supportive things you can do for your body.
If You’re Curious Where to Start
Start simple.
Move consistently.
Focus on breath.
Build strength over time.
And if you’re already showing up to class—you’re doing more than you think.
